Seattle Mariners: How a New Safeco Industry Measurements Can Help/Hurt the M's

Seattle Mariners fans will be walking right into a new-look Safeco Field Monday evening, and will certainly take awe at the recently finished 11,000-square-foot Jumbotron in center field. Somewhat less in that person will be the new dimensions of Safeco (via Nick Eaton of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer). The distances of both the left-field and right-field foul lines will be the same (331 and 326 feet, respectively), but the walls were moved in from left center to correct center, and so far as 17 feet in the left-center power alley. The best distance from home plate can go from 409 to 405 feet. The assumed end results of those changes are a growth in function generation to greatly help an offense on a three-year decline, for one. Another plus could be more long balls, captivating supporters and lowering the volume of low-scoring games. But opposing teams will be benefited by these changes as well, so with that in your mind let us take a look at how these new dimensions will help and harm the Mariners. House Work Resurrection Jason E. Watson/Getty Images Based on the ESPN Home Run Tracker, Safeco Field allowed the fewest property runs per game among American League ballparks (1.43) in 2012. Naturally the ability outage didn't make the games very interesting to watch. The decline in distance between the outfield fence and home plate may encourage more balls to leave the garden, attracting more people and growing ticket revenue. With the added power on the list this seasona'including Michael Morse and Kendrys Moralesa'the new measurements can help the Mariners in this aspect. Improved Solution Sales Otto Greule Jr/Getty Images As I discussed earlier, more butts will be ideally got by the assumed increase in offensive production by both the Mariners and opposing teams in seats. In accordance with ESPN.com, Safeco Field had among the worst work totals in every of baseball last period, averaging 44.4 percent capacity. Let's face it, lovers prefer to see home runs than the usual hard-fought 2-1 gritty pitchers duel. Hopefully there will be no shortage of fireworks in 2013 in Seattle, preserving the people in and the seagulls out. Less Floor to Address Jason O. Watson/Getty Images The Mariners' outfield got a little slower in 2013, and the stronger dimensions enables outfielders to track down balls in the distance faster, cutting down on extra-base hits. That goes both ways, however, so pace on the basepaths will be valued at a premium. Increased AGE Jonathan Daniel/Getty Photos More works means pitchers' ERAs will need a winner. It will maybe not be such a thing like bullying at Coors Field, but we can all expect to view a slight increase in ERA for the team in general this season due to the new dimensions. The Mariners needed change, and the newest dimensions of Safeco Field provide that. It remains to be observed simply how much those measurements will help and hurt the club.
