Olivier Bernard: Newcastle United must be quick to make their mark - ChronicleLive

Tonight's game with Benfica brings back a lot of memories of Newcastle United's last good run in Europe when I was part of Bobby Robson's team which reached the semi- finals when we lost to Marseille in 2004.

When you have somebody like Moussa Sissoko, who powers forward a lot, and Papiss Cisse, who can find a way through at any time, then it is Newcastle who can ask the tough questions of Benfica.

There was no Jonathan Woodgate or Kieron Dyer in the second leg and that made it a difficult night against a team like Marseille – they had Didier Drogba in their ranks.

However, this time around in the quarter-finals, I think  Newcastle can achieve big things once they do play together.

Tonight is a good opportunity to show how synchronised they can be and when they come together they can cause some damage.

Playing at home will give United the advantage in terms of players wanting to win the ball with that power, then using the speed we have to hurt them.

United know they have to score twice to go through and they know they have to give it everything without even thinking too deeply.
